What are menu item labels?

Mx - App - Food Labels

Menu item labels describe key attributes of a dish, such as vegan, gluten-free, or spicy. These labels help customers discover items that match their dietary needs, allergen considerations, and taste preferences.

When labels are applied, eligible items may appear in relevant filters on your store page, making it easier for customers to browse your menu.

Please note that label changes apply at the menu level. If a food item appears on multiple menus, the label will update across all of them. This also applies if you use a point-of-sale (POS) integration.

Where can I view menu item labels?

You can view labels for each item directly in Merchant Portal:

  1. Log in to the Merchant Portal

  2. Select Menu from the left-hand navigation

  3. Choose the menu you want to edit

  4. Select an item

Scroll to Food labels in the right-hand panel

How do I add, edit, or remove menu item labels?

Mx - Portal - Menu Manager - Food Labels

You can manage labels for individual menu items at any time.

  1. In the Menu, select the item you want to update

  2. Scroll to the Food labels section

  3. Select or deselect the appropriate labels

  4. Tap Save — your changes apply immediately

Tip: Review labels carefully — especially for dietary or allergen-related attributes — to make sure they accurately reflect your menu items.

How does DoorDash determine menu item labels?

DoorDash uses a combination of machine learning and human review to suggest labels based on:

  • Item names

  • Item descriptions

  • Menu photos

These suggestions help identify common dietary, allergen, and taste attributes, which you can then review in the Merchant Portal.

Why do some labels require review?

Some labels — such as gluten-free or vegan — are considered highly sensitive. Because customers rely on these labels to make safe choices, you must review and confirm them before they're used for discovery.

DoorDash may suggest a label, but it won't be applied until you approve it in the Merchant Portal.

What if I use a POS integration?

  • Enterprise Merchants: This feature isn't available. Contact your account owner or Merchant Support for guidance.

  • Non-Enterprise Merchants using POS integrations: You can still use Food labels.
